Restaurant review: Lotus Garden's new menu is worth the drive

A longtime neighborhood spot reinvents itself under new ownership, and mostly, it works.

Lotus Garden has been a strip-mall fixture for close to two decades, the kind of restaurant regulars love and newcomers drive past without a second glance. New ownership took over last year, kept the name and most of the staff, and quietly overhauled about half the menu. The results are, with a couple of exceptions, genuinely worth the drive.

The bún chả, new to the menu under the current ownership, is the clear standout: the grilled pork has real char, the broth is balanced rather than aggressively sweet, and the herb plate arrives generous enough for two people to fight over. The updated seafood claypot is close behind, though the portion has shrunk slightly compared to the previous version longtime regulars will remember, a change worth knowing about before you order for the table expecting the old size.

Not everything works. A new appetizer section leans heavily on fusion dishes — a lemongrass arancini, a bánh mì slider — that feel like they're chasing a different, younger crowd rather than building on what made the restaurant good in the first place. They're not bad, exactly, just unnecessary next to a menu of dishes the kitchen clearly does better.

Service remains a genuine strength, warm and unhurried in a way that's increasingly rare, and prices have risen only modestly despite the menu overhaul. For regulars nervous about a beloved spot changing hands, the short version is: go, order the bún chả, and don't overthink the appetizers.
